What you said about slash giving you an insight into gay relationships speaks for me, too. Slash got rid of that "ick" factor for me, because it allowed me to see how male/male sex might be romantic and loving. (...) If I take nothing else away from my foray into fan fiction, that will be enough.

Exactly what I meant but said in fewer words. It really has changed my mind -- and heart -- about male/male erotic love relationships.

Now, I don't imagine that erotica written by straight women depicts what really goes on between gay men (...).

True. I have read that gay men who have read slash written by women don't always have compimentary things to say about it. But the detractions are usually directed at the style of the erotica in most slash. That is, gay men are first and foremost men, and don't find smut written for women something that "works" for them very often. But I have not read that they thought the relationships themselves were badly written.
