I love the passage you've quoted here, beginning with Pippin's cheeky indignation and ending with that oh-so-poignant exchange between Bilbo, Frodo and Sam. And for some reason, this line:

‘Ah!' said Sam. ‘And where will they live? That’s what I often wonder.’

has always made me smile. It's so very hobbity, so very Sam-like, in the most endearing way.

The film scene is superb: it's a great piece of adaptation from the source material, proving that a fine adaptation need not make everything in the film 'just like it is in the book', which is certainly not always workable. This scene between Frodo and Sam, with those exquisite waterfalls in the background, shot in dreamy golden light, conveys everything that the audience needs to know, in terms of exposition and mood ...

... not least Frodo's expression. (Great work, Elijah).

Ha! I love that line of Sam's too. It's so recognizable to me, the sort of thing I'd wonder about too. I'd be wandering around Rivendell, mouth agape, but blurting to some ethereal Elf, "nice place, but where are the toilets?"

Yes, this is one of those LotR film scenes--original scenes--that works so well. I was saying higher up the page to Mews, I loved how the scene suggests rather than tells, leaving the interpretation of it more fluid or multivalent. I never get sick of it because it's never done, there's always some different way to hear or see it as I get older, or just keep reading the book.

(Yes, film Sam is adorable here. I'll bet this scene sparked a thousand fanfics.)

Sam is a typically pragmatic Hobbit! :D And I've often wondered about the plumbing in Lothlorien. ;) You'd think that the Noldor would be dab-hands at it, surely ... LOL! Like Frodo, I would love to hear an Elvish recital ... like you or Sam, I would also want to check out the loos. :p

Yes, absolutely. :)

That's a given. :D

Me, too. I want to go to heavenly concerts, but I want there to be a ladies nearby, with plenty of stalls. Maybe the toilets are right where you enter in the Hall of Fire? That would be easy to find, just like in a concert hall. ;)
