Thanks so much for pointing me to Serai's comments, Estë. I put in a comment to her there, to credit her if I end up discussing Frodo's change to personal pacificism. I had read both of Shippey's books, but hadn't remembered this about King Froda. I love the way you tied it to those lines from Jan's poem, too, about the King whose head lies "dishonoured, forgotten, by all same the errant wind". I'll have to send an e to Jan to let her know she's got these comments. I'll link her to Serai's comments, too.

Frodo as a peace-maker and peace-doer is an extremely important point to Jan, and she's made me more conscious of it, colouring some of my previous opinions about his refusal to bear arms after Mt. Doom. Her ideas are not seen as explicitly in the poems I've posted here, but Frodo and arms-bearing (*not*) is something she's talked about often in our emails discussing Frodo and LotR. Thanks!
