2007 LotR Calendar Scans….

I loved the 2007 LotR Portrait Calendar so much (photos by Pierre Vinet, who did virtually all the stills for the three films), I asked my husband to scan the pages so that I could make large versions to use online. I had some of these saved from internet sites already (like Frodo, Bilbo, and Sam), but none of them were big.

The pages were too large for the scanner, so the bottoms of the portraits were cut off. I had to crop the bottoms further for light-bleed, since the cover couldn't completely shut. The scans were a little washed-out, too, so I tweaked them to better match the originals.

I am quite pleased with how the finished images came out, large and clean. I am sorry about the bottoms being cut off, of course. (If any of you have large versions of the full portraits, I would love to have them!)

If anyone wants the full-sized scans, which are too large for Photobucket (each 7,000-13,000 KB), I will email them to you. The full scans have also been tweaked, but not cropped (showing holes at top, light-bleed at bottom). If you wanted to make hard copies, you might want to use these after you crop them or fiddle with them further.

Below is posted the large image of Frodo. For the rest of the portraits, please click open the thumbnails. (I did it this way so the page wouldn’t take so long to open.)

Again, much thanks and praise to the talents of photographer Pierre Vinet for his superb work here and elsewhere on the film project.

Note to people not familiar with opening images:

Once opened, the images under the thumbnails can be made still larger by clicking the button in the lower right-hand corner of the image. Hover the mouse over that area to find the button:

This pics are so beautiful! I have high quality prints of some of them (I found them in an issue of Empire magazine, if I'm not wrong).

Thanks for sharing, hon, have a nice Sunday.

You are welcome, Melyanna! When you say you have high-quality prints, do you mean the actual magazine, or digital scans of them? If they are scans, are they the full portraits (these have been cut off at the bottom because of the scanner window not being large enough for them)?

They are actual art prints, on photo paper (the size of an A4 sheet of paper), given freely with the copy of the magazine to celebrate the release of TTT.

I don't have a scanner, but I tried to take pics (poor quality, sorry) of them, to give you an idea:

As you can see, the portraits show a bit more on the lower side of the pics.

Oh, those are great, Melyanna! The calendar pictures do go down farther, but not that far (Oh, the detail on Legolas' and Arwen's costumes! *swoon*), but they have the logo printed across the bottoms, obscuring the images behind. What a treat to open your magazine and find such treasures!

Oh yes, the prints were the main (only?) reason for me to buy the magazine (no LOTR articles on it) and I was not disappointed!

It sounds well worth whatever was the purchase price. What a collector's item!

They're beautiful pictures!

I've always liked that Frodo picture, but like you, didn't realise how different both sides of his face are. Fascinating!

If these pictures were from a calendar, I assume one was on the front cover, as there are 13 pictures? :)

Bilbo's picture was on the first page, which showed the last four months of 2006. Frodo was "Mr. January". *g* Ann up there was saying what a shame it is there aren't portraits like these for the characters who come after. I agree! How I would love black and white portraits of this quality for Theoden, Eowyn, Eomer, and Grima, as well as Faramir, Denethor for Gondor, and (of course!) Smeagol/Gollum. I also feel that a full set needs Elrond. Not everyone liked Hugo Weaving as Elrond, but I did (apart from his intro. to the Council of Elrond speech which I thought sounded like his 92nd take, which it probably was).

I've always laughed to myself over PJ's and New Line's mystification over the popularity of these films with female fans. This calendar is a great example of why! LOL!

Oh, Chickenlegs, you are soooooooooo right!
