Thank you for this - research on Canova and many lovely pictures alike. (I was thinking I needed to do the same, but hadn't gotten around to it yet.)

Those statues are beautiful, - magnificant craftsmanship charged with tender abiding love as well as erotic tension. Unbelievably fiitting to the subject. :-) (I noted the missing fig leaf straight away too :o )

Did Canova make these on commission from wealthy patrons? I suppose he must have done. Imagine having one of those in your home. I'd almost never have budged from the room where I'd placed the statue! :-D

Maeglian, It is EVEN MORE gorgeous than I had thought. Go back up and read my edited addition about the myth in Bulfinch (from the Golden Bough). He's LEAVING her in the statue, not coming to get her. Oh, Whaaaaah!!!!

I checked out a site with an extended bio of Canova. It was quite interesting. Yes, he had a patron; more than one. I will add a link to it in the journal entry when I get back home in an hour or two.
