Pardon me for butting in, but if my memory serves me well, I think I remember seeing a twinge of regret in Gollum's face during Sam's United Nations speach. Or perhaps this occured at another point in the film.

BTW did I get the title right 'UN speach'?

You are right, Este. Gollum and his creators did a beautiful job on him in that moment. It was even specially scored by Howard Shore.

Still, hearing the Big Speech from Sam would not produce the same magical-moment-suspended-in-time effect that his coming upon the two hobbits sleeping, just by chance, in that way. If I recall, the thing that moved Gollum was seeing kinship in them at that moment, that he was like them, another hobbit. The U.N. speech could only appeal in so far as Sam was able to speak movingly, like any preacher or orator.

I'm not saying Sean didn't do a good job with his speech, it's just not something that would produce the same sort of response ... "Identification"?

P.S., Yeah, I've often heard that called Sam's "U.N. Speech". Quite right. (Just shows what people think of the U.N., sadly....)

Nothing could replace the scene in the book. It really is a heart-breaker. Now that I have read the books so many times I can dip into it for a treat. I often find myself returning to that particular scene in ‘The Stairs of Cirith Ungol’. My sensitive heart weeps also for Gollum. From the beginning he was someone’s innocent little baby, being cared for and loved.

*Oh shut up ST or you’ll be starting a Gollum Appreciation Society* **rolls eyes**.

I wish that scene had had been included in the film. Now that would have destroyed me.

That scene would have destroyed me, too. *whaaaah*

No, wait. If PJ, Fran, and Philippa got their hands on it, they'd probably change it. Sam, having been outrageously sent home, not Gollum would creep sadly up the ledge to see Frodo with his head in Gollum's lap. Gollum would open his lizard eyes and give Sam the smuggest, snarkiest tight-lipped smile. Sam would wibble then crawl off dejectedly to sob. *grrrrr*
