Wow, I love how Frodo's expression goes from reluctant to take the ring to accepting his task.

Beautiful screencaps, thank you!

Yeah, I never really picked up that much nuance watching the actual sequence. After all, Frodo doesn't yet know there will be any task. But he can tell from Gandalf's behaviour that something is up with it.

Sharp lad. Well, "best hobbit in all the Shire," and all that.

Isn't that the beauty of the films and of Elijah's acting - that you feel it instinctively that there is a depth to it and that closer analysis, for instance with screencaps, shows you how they did it. *happy*

All the more does his work in this scene impress me - the scene I think one of the best in the films - because, from the DVD extras, it looks as though he acted so much of it by himself, against blue screen. Maybe they had Ian McKellen act Gandalf over the tall scale double's shoulder.

But in the excellent take of him advancing towards the camera, looking about and thinking hard, saying, "All right, we'll put it away -- no one knows it's here, do they Gandalf?", he is being shot all by himself against blue screen, just doing the whole thing -- the lines, the walk, hitting his mark -- from remembered rehearsal and his own imaginative identification. But, in the finished sequence, edited in with Gandalf and the interior of Bag End, the sequence is COMPLETELY convincing.

Your comment really shows me that I have to watch the extras again. I have forgotten so much. *looks forward to re-discovering all those great insights*
