I, too, feel like I am soaring with the eagles when I read this. I remarked in an email to Jan that it made me feel their detachment, like you--the sense of great physical distance from the doings of those walking on the earth below, plus the expanse of time as experienced by these very long-lived creatures compared to the brief lives of the mortals they are called to rescue. Yet that detachment--the distance and expanse--and the very Bigness of the Great Tale they are in--makes the plight of the dying hobbits that much more poignant, as well as making the joy of their rescue and healing the sweeter.
