My Devoted Sam is book Sam: short, brown (tan) skin, dark curly hair, brown eyes.

Ah, I'm glad I asked. Because your Devoted Frodo closely resembles film-Frodo in his physical description (not in his character), I was wondering if Devoted Sam also resembled film-Sam in appearance, however different he was in character.

Ah, Bill Nighy. When I listen to his Sam, I know very well he looks nothing like a hobbit, but I forget it as soon as I start to lose myself in the story. He becomes "my" Sam. In fact, he becomes more than "my Sam". I confess his performance is so good, and so illuminating of Tolkien's Sam, that he made me see that I had been selling Sam short in all my years of reading. I had ... "under-imagined" him, I think.

One day I should write Bill Nighy a letter of appreciation, simply as a grateful fan of Tolkien.

Because it completely changes the story?

You knew I was being sarcastic, right?

Indeed! I shall never forget our merciless savaging of PJ's de-mercy-fying of the characters. :)

Guilty, guilty, guilty about fanfic Frodo resembling Frolijah. But I mean, c'mon. Look at what you posted there. I mean, COME ON! *licks the monitor*

My letter:

Dear Bill,

Thank you so much for your portrayal of Sam. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you mwhah! big kiss,

Love,

Ha! Love your letter to Bill Nighy. And, do you know what, I think he would love it, too.

And, hey, Frodo in my story closely resembles film-Frodo, too, although I don't ever give an explicit description of him. The story's readers have got my number, you can bet. One or two references to "dark hair" and "pale skin" and they know what image is in the author's mind.
