That's a scary looking snake, Maewyn! When you said you sent it to school in a flagon to show the children I assumed you meant alive, but, no, of course not, since you killed it. How did you kill it?

The snake was more of an olive greenish brown than the one in the picture. It didn't have any mottled colouring either.

It was at the side of the house near the driveway. Laurie got a rake and a spade. He pinned it down with the rake on the concrete and I used the spade to try to cut its head off. It wasn't a pleasant experience and one I wouldn't want to do again. My Dad had despatched many snakes in his vineyard over the years, but I think his tools were a bit sharper than ours.

You've got to feel sorry for the snake ("I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time; I just wanted to find some vermin to eat, stuff you don't want in your yard, anyway!"), but you can't have a poisonous -- very poisionous -- snake living at your house. I'd do the same.

I agree entirely. They don't go out of their way to cause fear and mayhem. They're just going about their natural business.

At the time we were in a bit of a dilemma. Do we let it go, and not know where it's hiding? The boys wouldn't have been allowed outside in case they unknowingly got too close to it some time. If it did get away outside our property, would someone else have been in danger?

How do you keep it contained until you found a herpetologist willing to pick it up? We weren't aware of any official authorities that you could contact to take them away back then.

So, we felt that this was the only way for everyone to be safe.

I think you did the right thing.
