Yes, I felt a bit like a cheat, making the Professor's hand be doing something it wasn't as he sat there under the tree, but I didn't think he'd mind if it was to be encouraging to Frodo during his remembered travails.

It's funny you should remark that JRRT's procrastination is encouraging to you. Me, too! I'm terrible for getting lost in side-research and other things, leaving the main task undone. He had a Lewis to keep encouraging and pressing him to finish, though, and to publish. Without Lewis, there wouldn't be any LotR. For that alone, I am truly grateful for Lewis. He was like that, though, or so it sounds: very encouraging and supportive to his friends and peers. In the case of Tolkien, I think their opposite temperamental and working qualities complemented each other in a friendship founded on shared enthusiasms.

I'll never forget the quote of Lewis' reaction to a JRRT draft reading--I don't remember if it was Glorfindel's introduction or someone else's, but Lewis remarked, "Oh no! Not another f****ing Elf!"

I imagine PJ, Fran and Philipa took that "criticism" to heart when they decided to replace Glorfindel with Arwen.(-;
