NF-Lee's Gildor and Frodo

Old images of Drogo Baggins found?

Posted on 2008.12.09 at 12:05

ETA: Ha ha ha! I sure can't subtract, as serai1, mole_caz and pearlette helpfully and graciously pointed out below. So forget all that stuff I said about Rufus Sewell's and Drogo's comparative ages. Let's just say Sewell would make a great father to EW's film-Frodo.

Below are photos I found on the internet of actor Rufus Sewell, as he appeared in the 1994 TV miniseries Middlemarch.

I vote for Adah Sharma--she looks like a cross between Lij and Liv.

Absolutely perfect!

Mm hmmm.
melyanna_65 at 2008-12-09 18:36 (UTC) (Link)
I totally agree, he would be perfect for Drogo Baggins!

mechtild at 2008-12-09 21:29 (UTC) (Link)
I think he'd do nicely playing Daniel Radcliffe's father, too, come to think of it.
fordsflappers at 2008-12-09 18:44 (UTC) (Link)
Well, that's...creepy.

PS Did you ever get those quotes I sent you?
mechtild at 2008-12-09 21:34 (UTC) (Link)

Yes, I did, fordsflappers. With a quote from Paglia, Plato, Freud and so on. I answered it at length, too. It was a few weeks back, no? Was it a regular LJ comment to a post? I can't remember now which post , but if you do, I could find the entry and send you a link to the right page. If it was a private message through LJ, I am afraid I don't know how to find where those are archived. I've hardly ever received one.

Wow! He truly looks like Drogo! Just... wow.
mechtild at 2008-12-09 21:34 (UTC) (Link)
Hi, Ellin! Glad to hear you second it.
mole_caz at 2008-12-09 19:35 (UTC) (Link)
Yes he would make a very good Drogo but isn't Rufus about 27 in these pictures? I wasn't sure where your 46/47 comes from.
mechtild at 2008-12-09 21:35 (UTC) (Link)
Yes, I changed that in an ETA, Mole Caz. Serai and Pearlette pointed that out, too. I had a complete Subtraction Failure and posted the entry before I'd let any one proof it for glaring errors. He was an old 27, but he wasn't 47!!!

Yes, he very much could! But looking at these expressions, this Drogo would definitely not be where Frodo got his sweet temper. Why, I think this Drogo could very well have really drownded Primula before the boat took him with it! (-;
mechtild at 2008-12-09 21:37 (UTC) (Link)
Hmmm. Perhaps you are right, Lavender. Rufus has played a lot of bad guys. But he was a very compelling, empathetic hero in "Dark City", full of angst and suffering passion, just like film-Frodo.

serai1 at 2008-12-09 19:50 (UTC) (Link)
Um, did you mean 26? or 36? Because if he was born in 1967, that would make him 41 years old now.

and yes, he could easily have played Frodo's father. Good find!

Sorry, but I just have to say, I absolutely adore your icon!
lily_the_hobbit at 2008-12-09 20:06 (UTC) (Link)
Perfect, indeed!

Sewell, born in 1967, would have been 46 or 47 when it was filmed.

Er, Sewell is younger than me, and I'm 46 now. I was born in 1962, and he was born in 1967. So back in 1994 he'd have been 27. ;)

That was a wonderful series. I've tried reading the book. Twice. Since my sister calls it the best novel in the English language. Well, I tried, but gave up. Twice. I simply loved the mini-series though. :) Rufus was very sexeh as Will Ladislaw.

He makes a great Drogo. :) I've never had a firm picture of Drogo in my mind, but this is great. Sewell always has a sexy edge to him, so it's very intriguing to imagine a Drogo with a sexy edge. Makes him far more interesting. :D

Now we know where his son got his good looks from. ;)
mechtild at 2008-12-09 21:05 (UTC) (Link)
Yes, as Serai pointed out above, I made a gross subtraction error (now fixed). Well, he sure looked old for 26 or 27.

Sewell always has a sexy edge to him, so it's very intriguing to imagine a Drogo with a sexy edge. Makes him far more interesting.

I never imagined Drogo as sexy either. It would make for better fanfic, that's for sure. ;) But the slander about his death implied he was particularly portly, too, didn't it?

"I think Sewell would have made a perfect father to film-Frodo."

Yes, he would! What a handsome man he is/was.

They both have the big expressive eyes and chiselled faces. The mop of dark hair helps a lot, too. And the clothes.

He's old enough now to play Drogo, I guess (who at 72 would be like a human in his mid-forties). But Sewell's aged a lot since then. He looks as old for his age as EW looks young.
belleferret at 2008-12-09 22:31 (UTC) (Link)
Oh yes, very good!
mechtild at 2008-12-09 23:09 (UTC) (Link)
Hi, Belleferret, I was hoping people would find it a fun comparison.
aussiepeach at 2008-12-10 00:08 (UTC) (Link)
Ooh, never thought of Rufus in the role before, but v. good choice. Otherwise, Colin Firth!
mechtild at 2008-12-10 00:49 (UTC) (Link)
No, Colin Firth for Frodo, not Drogo. :) Before I saw the films, I wondered why they hadn't asked Firth to play the role.

WOW - that really does look like a perfect match!! I wish we had a pic of him smiling - because surely Drogo smiled a LOT - esp. after little Frodo came along!!

You are quite right. A bigger, more generous smile is called for. I have never read Middlemarch, so I don't know what the character is like that Sewell is portraying in these shots, but he may have had a very serious or brooding character. The second two frames do show a bit of a smile, but nothing full out.
