Would they have stayed at home had they known? Or, like the hobbits, would they have gone anyway, drawn by their sense of honour and strong bonds of friendship?

Such an eternal question! I think the Professor poured so much of himself into his great Tale.

The poem stirs mine, too, Shirebound. And the quote? I really hadn't applied the idea to Tolkien until I read more about his life in the war, the letters written between his friends, plus the tales of other war friendships. I really liked that book of Garth's. It influenced my reading of the text quite a lot.
