2007 LotR Calendar Scans….

I loved the 2007 LotR Portrait Calendar so much (photos by Pierre Vinet, who did virtually all the stills for the three films), I asked my husband to scan the pages so that I could make large versions to use online. I had some of these saved from internet sites already (like Frodo, Bilbo, and Sam), but none of them were big.

The pages were too large for the scanner, so the bottoms of the portraits were cut off. I had to crop the bottoms further for light-bleed, since the cover couldn't completely shut. The scans were a little washed-out, too, so I tweaked them to better match the originals.

I am quite pleased with how the finished images came out, large and clean. I am sorry about the bottoms being cut off, of course. (If any of you have large versions of the full portraits, I would love to have them!)

If anyone wants the full-sized scans, which are too large for Photobucket (each 7,000-13,000 KB), I will email them to you. The full scans have also been tweaked, but not cropped (showing holes at top, light-bleed at bottom). If you wanted to make hard copies, you might want to use these after you crop them or fiddle with them further.

Below is posted the large image of Frodo. For the rest of the portraits, please click open the thumbnails. (I did it this way so the page wouldn’t take so long to open.)

Again, much thanks and praise to the talents of photographer Pierre Vinet for his superb work here and elsewhere on the film project.

Once opened, the images under the thumbnails can be made still larger by clicking the button in the lower right-hand corner of the image. Hover the mouse over that area to find the button:

Yes, Mechtild, you're so right: that calendar is absolutely stunning!

B&W pics have such an impact, don't they?

Though I do have the calendar myself, on behalf of all that don't: thank you!!
Everbody should see this!

*hugs you*

I like to post images and send them, so it would never do just to have the calendar. I'm just glad my husband can use the very good scanner where he works. Thanks so much for commenting!

That picture of Frodo.... *stares*

It's an arresting picture, isn't it? I never appreciated it as much small, but I like it very much as a large image.

Oh, I adore this calendar - I think I fell even more in love with Boromir from this portrait - and weep that a similar set of photographs wasn't done for the additional cast members of "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King."

Frodo! And Pip! Scruffy Ranger Aragorn! The fearsomely attractive Gimli! And my husband hung out in the laundry room for a whole month just so he could ogle Arwen.*g*

Ah, how wonderful it would be to see images from Pierre Vinet for Eowyn, Theoden, Eomer, Grima, Denethor, Faramir, and, (my favourite lesser character), Mardil (Faramir's second in command in TTT and RotK)! Maybe they will save them for a future calendar? Even if Vinet didn't do black and whites of them, I'll bet he did colour portraits, and they could be photoshopped into black and whites of good quality that would match these. I'd *love* to have these portraits for the whole cast.

Thank you (and Mr. Mechtild) so much for posting these, Mechtild.

I had the famous black and white Frodo picture saved already, but I don't believe I have ever seen any of the others. What a treat! I'm not sure if this calendar even appeared here in the UK, but I'm so pleased to have the whole 'set' at last.

I especially like the picture of Bilbo. He looks very much the gentleman hobbit, albeit a little eccentric. I detect an air of mischief about him.

Thanks again,
Blossom.

Thank YOU, Blossom. I had discovered the Bilbo portrait online after the Frodo, and just loved it, but it was a smallish image. I am very grateful this series was put onto the 2007 calendar so that I could have them scanned and post larger versions.

Those black and white pics are stunning - esp. Frodo. It's amazing how I am still drawn to his eyes even in black and white. Thanks so much - I have so many of your previous posts bookmarked but haven't had a chance to go back thru them yet - so sorry I haven't been commenting. Your posts are something to be savored - not skimmed - so I WILL get to them one of these days!! *hugs*

Black-and-white Fro!

I have that. Plus a teeny-tiny version which a friend sent me, now in a silver frame.

They're so marvellous, these art prints. Everybody looks fabulous (I swoon for Galadriel's exquisite satin cloak!) ... everybody apart from poor Arwen, whose face looks too long and thin. Not the most flattering portrait of Liv, I have to say. A shame because she usually looks gorgeous as Arwen. That shot doesn't do her justice.

Sam (sexeh!) and Boromir (phwooooaaarr!) are my runner-up faves ...

but Black-and-White Fro reigns supreme!!

Do notice the two sides of his face, and how the two together make up the irresistable whole: the left side, all creamy and pure, is Innocent Fro, the right side, shadowed and sexy, is Devilish Fro. Wonderfully shot, cleverly lit: it makes for an utterly alluring portrait. That Master Baggins is smokin', baby, smokin'. :D

You know, Pearl, except in colour (in which, it turned out, the colour was fake anyway), I didn't really respond to this Frodo portrait. In its large, detailed version, I do. But I didn't know why I still found it unsettling, as if it were a portrait of someone else. I think you have put your finger on it. Tairie (who is an artist) was the first to point out to me how very different the two sides of EW's (and thus Frodo's) face are, particularly his eyes. She thought it added to his intriguing appeal. The lighting, as you point out, does a lot here.

I followed your lead and covered first one side and then the other with my hand. Good heavens, what a difference! You are so on target! The left side has a very mild, beneficent look; the right, an intense look, which fans can interpret as Ring-Frodo--or sex-Frodo--perhaps they are the same thing (*g*). Anyway, wow.

I can't agree on Arwen. Yes her face is too long--Liv Tyler's face is too long for how wide it is, that is true. Her straight-on shots are usually not that good unless she is shot from above (foreshortening the lower part of her face), of if her close-ups are so close they concentrate on her huge, fathomless eyes, high brow, and full mouth, cutting off her chin at a point that conceals the length of her face. But it is not that her face is too long, but too narrow. If she had the same length face but a wider face, it would all be in proportion. Her profile shots are all EXQUISITE.

I know most of the pictures, of course, and I love that stunning Frodo-portrait (as everyone obviously does), but my two favorites are the pictures of Galadriel and ---Gandalf. Won-der-ful.

My favourites in this series, actually, are Gandalf and Bilbo. They are just exquisite to me. Frodo's portrait from this series, however popular, has never appealed to me until I saw the big, detailed version of it. It just didn't look Frodo-ish to me, but like someone dressed up as Frodo. Pearl has helped me to see my way to really, truly liking it. (See above.)

Yes, they are excellent. As Ann pointed out, it's a shame there are no comparable portraits for the characters that came later in TTT and RotK. How I would love those, too!

Guuuuuh! Heavens, they ALL look gorgeous!

But Frodo... my heart skipped when I looked at this B&W portrait of his. I knew it, but not in that kingly size. :-)
Thanks so much, Mrs. and Mr. Mechtild for scanning and posting!

You are welcome, Whiteling. As Ann said above, our joy could only be complete if they posted images like these for the characters introduced in TTT and RotK. Ah, for images like this for those characters!

Isn't it a great calendar? I hope they make another featuring the characters who don't appear until the 2nd and 3rd films.

Thank you, Julchen. When I ever finish the screencaps, I'll do a few more manips. With your aesthetic sense, I know you will like them too.

I love that calendar far more than the calendars with movie stills that have been around for years. I bought one for myself and 10 for gifts. This is the first year I wasn't anxious for January to end...which was Frodo, of course. ;>)

mechtild at 2007-06-03 02:07 (UTC) (Link)
I didn't want January to end, either, especially since I had never turned the page! I was that in love with the portrait of Bilbo for the last four months of 2006. I find the Frodo portrait intriguing, but the Bilbo portrait I find, I don't know, as if it's a quintessential portrayal of him as played by Ian Holm.

These are truly stunning.. I adore the Frodo picture most of all, naturally. Thank you so much..big is so much better isn't it.
I want to take this opprtunity too to say i have all your lovely screen caps saved in a special file..they are so very lovely. please accept my apologies for not commenting on them sooner..all your posts are wonderful. I read them all but don't always have the time to comment.. thank you so much!

Bellewood, hello! I can't read your LJ name without thinking of you and the rest working as extras on the Oxford Murders. I am SO hoping that plays here. Otherwise I'll have to wait until it goes to DVD. When the film comes out, you--all of you--simply must say if you see yourselves in the lecture crowd final cut. How cool it would be to make the final print!

Yes, these shots of Pierre Vinet's were just great. I was thrilled when they were put into a calendar. Above, Ann (Marwalk) pined that no characters introduced in TTT or RotK were represented in the calendar. I thought maybe they'd do another with their pictures (the protagonists from Rohan and Gondor, plus Treebeard), but she thinks not; not enough market left at this point. I suppose she's right. *sigh* But I'd LEAP at the opportunity to buy a book of Vinet's LotR cast portraits (he shot SO many!!!--film scenes and behind the scenes). Maybe, some day they'll publish such a book? I won't hold my breath, but would I be thrilled!

I have the 2007 LotR Portrait Calendar, all times I turn over its pages my heart-rate increases. These pics are wonderful and Frodo's is the best of all. I'm in love with that Folijah.
Thank you for your very useful work of scanning all that sheer bliss!
